This class is centered on the book In the Shadow of Obscurity: Toiling in a Reluctant Society. The book tells the stories of 27 unheralded athletes of color whose skills and achievements contributed to an array of individual and team accomplishments, along with the journalists who championed their causes. In line with the book’s theme, the class will explore social justice and racism in America as seen through the prism of professional sports.

Pete Elman has worked as a musician, composer, artist, and producer since 1963. He has published two acclaimed books and covered sports for the Contra Costa Times. He is currently teaching 16 different popular classes on contemporary American music and sports in the Bay Area.
