Join us for “A Listening Foray” — an immersive outdoor experience where we'll hear the natural world amplified through professional field-recording microphones and wireless in-ear monitors. Guided by Lish Grooves, a Bay Area musician, field recording artist, and environmental sound practitioner, we'll listen to the soundscape in real time, as well as explore distinct elements through facilitated listening — such as birdsong slowed down to reveal more detail. 

This experience is many things:

• It’s acoustic ecology — learning to pick apart the biophony (life), the geophony (wind, water, earth), and the anthrophony (us).
• It’s meditation — slowing down, calming the nervous system, hearing as a portal into the present.
• It’s music — discovering just how musical the world’s soundscapes really are, and then hearing them composed, live, into something more.

You'll leave with a different relationship to listening, and to the place itself. No experience is necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to sit still and pay attention.

• Saturday, November 7, 10 AM — will wrap up by noon
• Fern Picnic Area, Tilden Park
• Limited to 13 members
• $35 cash per person — OLLI staff will collect payment and give it to Lish
• Logistical details will be shared with registrants as we get closer to the event
• Rain will cancel, as we’ll be seated outdoors with no covered structure. We’ll provide plenty of notice and reschedule if necessary.
• Hearing accessibility: Attendees with mild to moderate hearing loss can have a genuinely wonderful experience by simply removing their hearing aids and wearing the in-ear monitors instead — the amplification does a lot of the work on its own. If you have more significant hearing loss, we can connect you with Lish to discuss what to expect.
