Naples: A Mediterranean Capital of the Fine and Performing Arts

Few are truly aware of the paramount artistic and architectural legacy of this southern metropolis, the third biggest city in Italy with over 2 million inhabitants. Yet, since its Greek foundation to the present day, Naples has taken on various political roles in different era, each carrying a distinct cultural heritage. From comedy, to music, to literature, to cinema, to architecture, and all the fine arts, the Neapolitan creatives have populated history books. This course will survey the unparalleled contribution and appeal of an environment with no equals in Italy and the whole Mediterranean.
Faculty Bio
Pierluigi Serraino is a practicing architect and educator. He is the author of many books on architecture, including TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered. His latest book is The Modern Garden: The Outdoor Architecture of Mid-century America (Rizzoli, 2024).
