Vienna: An Urban and Architectural Center Over the Centuries

Few places have cast such enduring fascination as Vienna in the last 500 years. The grand rival of Paris for splendor and political ambition, this city experienced hyperbolic growth in the age of empire collecting some of the finest expressions of human culture. From music to the performing and fine arts, to architecture, to sciences, Vienna has inspired artistic and scientific experiments of profound consequences in Western civilization. This course delves into the glorious urban and architectural history to the present day of one of the most prominent capitals of Europe.
Faculty Bio
Pierluigi Serraino is a practicing architect and educator. He is the author of many books on architecture, including TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered. His latest book is The Modern Garden: The Outdoor Architecture of Mid-century America (Rizzoli, 2024).
