In nonfiction films, which are more essential than ever, the subject matter is often perceived as overshadowing the artistry of the filmmaking process. In truth, the filmmaker’s narrative, thematic, and aesthetic choices are as important as the material itself. Each class meeting will include a screening of a recent or in-progress documentary film followed by a candid discussion with the film’s director.
The filmmakers scheduled to appear are:
- Kathryn Golden and Ashley James, Santos–Skin to Skin (2022, 75 min)
- Tarabu Betsarai Kirkland, One Hundred Years from Mississippi (2021, 60 min)
- Adriana Marchione and Dianne Griffin, The Creative High (2022, 75 min)
- William Farley, I Wanted to Be a Man with a Gun (2022, 88 min)
- Theo Rigby, Waking Dream (2018, 53 min)
- Myra Paci, Adventures in Peterland: a mystery of love and art (2022, 77 min)
Michael Fox is a film journalist and critic for KQED Arts, among other outlets. A member of the San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle and inductee of the S.F. Film Society’s Essential SF, he has taught documentary classes at OLLI @Berkeley for 15 years.
