The Art of the Film Score

This class surveys the history and development of music for film, from its earliest inception in silent films, through the “Golden Age” of Hollywood movies and the eclectic period of the 1950s and 1960s, to the return of the classic orchestral film score with Star Wars. We will view selected film clips that illustrate how music supports and complements a film’s narrative elements, and explore technical and musical developments. We will also explore the social aspects of film scores, such as the issue of music censorship.
Marcia Bauman earned a Ph.D. in composition from the Eastman School of Music. She has taught film music history at the College of Marin and the San Francisco Academy of Art University, and composition at Stanford and Sonoma State Universities.
