San Francisco in Photographs, 1850–2020 (Best of OLLI)
The San Francisco Bay Area’s natural beauty and social history have inspired photographers from the time photography was invented. To create San Francisco: Portrait of City, author and photo researcher Richie Unterberger selected the most striking images that document the Bay Area’s history. This course will use photography to examine the evolution of Bay Area architecture, music, political activism, and landscapes from 1850 to the present, and feature work by some of the most internationally renowned photographers of several eras.

Member Praise for San Francisco in Photographs
Fun course. I like photographic art, so the course was a fun way for me to learn about the history of SF.
The pace was good. The range of photos were so interesting. Having grown up here it was great to see my memories on film.
Covering such an extensive span of photography in SF was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed the older photographs (1850-1900) as well as the 1980s-2022 which is the time frame I've been here in the Bay area.
