As the global economic center of gravity shifts to the east, economic relations between China, the Middle East, and the North African region have become increasingly deep and multifaceted. The relationship among these regions has started to move beyond economic interests to include strategic considerations. This course will respond to a the question: What motivating factors explain China’s decision to forge closer ties to Middle Eastern countries? Particular attention will be devoted to the relations between China and Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Egypt, Pakistan, and Israel.
