Cuba Today: Religion and SocietyProgram Summary:
Delve into the rich history and heritage of Cuba. In the heart of Havana and Cienfuegos, meet members of the local communities to discuss their faith, lives and, cultural traditions. Meet face-to-face with community leaders, local residents, artists and intellectuals to discuss Cuba today, and explore local landmarks that are significant to Cuba's cultural heritage.

Program Highlights:

  • Discuss the state of religion, family and society in Cuba today as you meet with a Catholic priest and a sociologist.
  • Learn about art education in Cuba during an informative talk with the director of a local art school, and later observe classes and meet the students.
  • Meet with practitioners of Santeria, learn about this unique Cuban religion, and witness a musical and dance performance influenced by those beliefs.

  • Double Occupancy                 $3,295
  • Single Occupancy                  $3,593

Program Price includes the following:  8 nights at hotels in Miami, Havana, Cienfeugos; Charter flights:  Miami to Cuba, Cuba to Miami; all program fees, presentations, activities, gratuities and airport transfers; 21 meals (8 B, 6 L, 7 D), Medical Emergency Evacuation Insurance and Cuba travel visa.

Special Guest Lecturer – Alex M. Saragoza
Alex M. Saragoza has served as Chair of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley (1994-1997), and subsequently as Director of International Education Programs (1997-1999). He is a member of the systemwide UC-Cuba Initiative, and a member of the Cuba Working Group at the Berkeley campus. Professor Saragoza is currently conducting research for a comparative study of the tourist industry in Mexico and Cuba. He is a professor of history in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Alex Saragoza will be teaching a course called "Contemporary Cuba" at OLLI on Thursdays, 10:00 am-12:00 noon starting February 2.
